Exercise 2: Selecting 3 Stop-Motion Films (Week 1)

1. 'DISAPPEAR' by Hendrikus De Vann

'Disappear' is a stop motion animation about a man who decided to disappear from his social and corporate paradigms as a means to pursue his long kept dream.

The reason why I chose this film as one of my favourites is because of how detailed it is in terms of its mise-en-sceneThe lighting used in this film is greatly appreciated, it almost resembles a film noir in terms of the stark lighting effects used as well as it being in black and white.

Personally, the sound scape in this was well done. The continuous diegetic sound of the phone ringing and the alarm ringtone cautioning the character to "work" is a constant reminder to the audience that despite the character being well informed that he needs to answer to his corporate demands, he strongly neglects it as he gradually becomes more occupied with the idea of reliving his old dream. This is also accompanied with the starting of the non-diegetic sound (score) at the moment he started to imagine him pursuing his dream.

Other than that, Vann did an incredible job in the small details within the character design such as the character's eyes and the attempt to mimic life-like movements.

2. 'Lego In Real Life - Trilogy' by BrickBros Productions

'Lego In Real Life' is a stop motion trilogy video that depicts a slight comedic approach to how life would be like if LEGO was incorporated in it. Although this is a stark contrast to the first video mentioned, there are a few reason why I decided to include this video.

Firstly, the smooth transitions between each transformation is greatly appreciated. This can be seen throughout the whole video such as cooking the eggs and painting the duck sculpture.

Secondly, I like how the non-diegetic sounds (score) were used and was gradually increased to convey the emotional intensity of stress and restlessness the character was facing when he had to repeatedly cook the eggs until he was satisfied. Moreover, this also added a comedic effect as the music helps to poke fun out of the character's actions.

Overall, I thought that this was an enjoyable, light-hearted video that reached its objective to entertain its viewers.

3. 'FISHWITCH' by Adrienne Dowling

'Fishwitch' is a fantasy stop-motion animated film that presents an unexpected friendship between an iceberg-dwelling witch and a merman.

The reason why I chose this as one my three favourite stop motion films is because of the great cinematography. Personally, I think the camera angles and movement (panning) as well as the smooth transitions between each scene is well done.

It is also great in terms of its mise-en-scene. The setting used for this short film is also well done as it effectively shows both the witch's and the merman's living environment. Character design is good as well as it clearly shows important character traits such as the merman being of fish descendant.

Moreover, there was a good selection of both non-diegetic and diegetic sounds used for the sound scape and essentially helps to evoke certain emotions in each different situations in the film.
