Graphic Novel

For this project, we are expected to produce a graphic novel and animate the panels to turn it into an animated comic.

Firstly, we were instructed to find a narrative that was well-suited to our own personal tastes in order to be able to visually represent the narrative into a graphic novel. Though, we were given some resources to get us started as we were given examples of urban legends as well as some poetry by Edgar Allan Poe.

I found myself leaning more towards poetry and decided to loosely base my graphic novel on Edgar Allan Poe's poem, 'Annabel Lee.'

Planning - Analysis of poem

Fig 1.0 Poe's Annabel Lee - poem (1849)

I noticed that the poem has a retrospective narrative as the narrator looks back on his memories with 'Annabel Lee' as he tries to figure out a reason behind her death. As he attempts to do this, we as readers notice that he starts to blame angels, demons, her family as well as the universe for taking her away from him. In result, the whole poem ends with a bittersweet atmosphere as he repeatedly calls for her name, yearning for her to come back to him.

From this, the main theme of this poem would certainly be love. I plan to illustrate this by focusing on the imagery of the couple together and getting separated by the beings that were blamed in the poem.

Things to consider:

Characters that will be present in the graphic novel:
  • Annabel Lee
  • (My interpretation of) The narrator
  • "Highborn Kinsman"
  • Angels/Demons
      Setting/places:
      • Kingdom + sea
      • Sepulchre/tomb
      Setting/time:
      • Middle Ages/Medieval - 5th to the 15th century
        • 'romantic' imagery - "Sepulchre", "Kingdom", supernatural beings - "angels"
      • (Written in the 19th century, 1849)
