Introduction to Character Design - Vormator Shapes and Pen tool
(27/08/18) Week 1

The objective of our first task is to practice using the pen tool by tracing the 'Vormator' shapes. The general idea behind the 'Vormator' exercise is for us to be challenged by limiting ourselves to these shapes and only using these shapes to create a character design.

Creating the character's silhouette

Fig 1.1 Initial plan

I wanted to design a character that represents tradition and spirituality. I've always admired Hayao Miyazaki for his work and I've recently revisited one of his films, Spirited Away. Deeply influenced by this, I decided I wanted to try to design a character that would belong in a setting similar to Spirited Away.

I came up with three drafts and I decided to go with my third draft based on the feedback I got when I asked people which one they liked better.

Drafts:

Preparing for laser cut:

Before laser cutting, I made sure I prepped and created a separate file with the outline/silhouette of my character.

I felt that I wasn't as satisfied with the pigment of the product as it was not the accurate color. Though this is to be expected and other than that, I'm quite fine with how it turned out.

Referring to Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, it is important to know these different types of panel-to-panel transitions

  • Action-to-Action
  • Subject-to-Subject
  • Scene-to-Scene
  • Aspect-to-Aspect

Transition exercise:

Fig 2.7 Example of panels

The transition exercise was simply selecting a few panels from Fig 2.7, and label what type of transition it is.
